Abstract: The histopathologic analysis represents the first and most significant moment of the intervention of the pathologist in oncology, intervention that is complemented by an appropriate staging and proper biological characterization of the tumor. Modern imaging techniques multispectral in the infrared (IR) window can provide important information, both morphological and functional, in the analysis of histological samples. Considering that significant indications for the identification of a disease tissue are obtained by the comparison of their morphological characteristics (architecture, shape, symmetry) with the functional characteristics of the sample, this type of survey can be a valuable aid in the classification for the anatomo-pathologist and in the diagnostic evaluation. The use of infrared imaging techniques, in a multispectral morpho-functional approach can be a powerful tool for the fast and reliable classification of tissues, avoiding the use of exogenous markers. In this project we aim, in particular, to develop techniques for multispectral imaging in the Middle and Far Infrared (THz) for analysis and automated diagnostics of tissue samples with solid tumors, in order to pave the way, in the near future, for a potential in vivo use of the same techniques. The achievement of these results will require the creation of a joint research team that includes specialists in applied optics, spectroscopy and medical diagnostics, able to develop innovative diagnostic techniques that respond to the real medical needs and that effectively interface with the methods commonly used.
