Abstract: In this project we investigated superintense laser pulse absorption and related electron and ion acceleration mediated by resonant surface wave excitation in grating targets.
Our work was mainly theoretical and was based both on analytical modeling and numerical simulations, both using an originally developed code for electromagnetic propagation on dielectric surfaces and self-consistent, electromagnetic particle-in-cell simulations of laser-plasma interactions performed on parallel supercomputers.
The work has been the basis for a devoted experimental campaign in an European facility, aiming to demostrate resonant surface wave absorption at the highest intensities reported so far using ultrahigh contrast pulses.
