Demonstration of Spatial Riemann Waves and Inviscid Burgers\’Equation Dynamics in Nonlinear Optics

Abstract: We report on observation of spatial Riemann wave dynamics in a nonlinear m-cresol/nylon thermal solution, obtained by properly tailoring the initial optical beam. Experimental results show controllable steepening and shock formation, in good agreement with theory.
