Abstract: Techniques of optical design have been applied to integrated optical systems. A novel class of waveguide lenses is presented, called CHARLES (Corrected Homogeneous Acircular Refractive LEns System). CHARLES consists of a small number of single lenses bounded by non circular arcs and non-uniformly spaced: it is capable of diffraction-limited performance over relatively large field angles, i. e. up to 10 degree from the axis for f/number about 3.
