eduroam (acronym for EDUcation ROAMing) is an international roaming service for people working in research and higher education.
It provides researchers, teachers and students with easy and secure access to the network when they visit institutions other than the one where they work. Authentication of users is performed by their home institution, using the same credentials provided by it, while authorization to access the Internet and other resources is managed by the host institution. There is no payment for using eduroam. The service is provided at a local level by participating institutions (universities, research institutes, etc.), while at a national level it is organized by the country’s operators. At a global level, the eduroam service is managed by TERENA, which is also the owner of the eduroam trademark. In Italy, the federation is coordinated by GARR, which represents it with other federations and confederations. Cnr – Istituto Nazionale di Ottica participates as a Resource Provider.
