Light will make the future of data, the new oil, even brighter. Among the technologies that promise to revolutionize telecommunications, two stand out: they are called Li-Fi and Visible Light Communication (VLC). «Visible Light Communication aims to use LEDs not only to illuminate or signal something, but also to transmit data wirelessly», this is the incipit of the interview in Il Bollettino with Jacopo Catani, head of the experimental research group of CNR National Institute of Optics on Wireless Optical Communications (OWC) and Visible Light Communications (VLC). The Institute’s projects in this area are numerous and pioneering: from the automotive field for safer and more monitored movement of automotive vehicles to indoor localization to encourage the flow of people in environments, from “intelligent” traffic lights to museums capable of provide information directly to visitors’ devices using visible radiation instead of radio frequencies. The key element is integrating new technologies into existing infrastructures that already use LED light. The future is now brighter and more sustainable.
