Complex dynamics in dc glow discharge tubes

In this experiment we explore the dynamical behavior of plasma tubes in the region of glow discharge. A phenomenological model based on the macroscopic electrical features leads to a two-dimensional nonlinear model which is not able to explain the observed chaotic behavior. Additional considerations, related to the transition to chaos and plasma physics, suggest the introduction of additional degrees of freedom. Our final model gives a fair representation of the observed phenomena.
