Abstract: A Fabry-Perot cavity with a high-reflecting rear mirror is used to perform a tomographic measure of the Wigner function of the field generated by a quantum-well laser diode emitting at 820 nm. The phase noise, which is typically 60 dB above the shot noise level, is strongly reduced by the value of the free-running laser. Moreover, the amplitude noise is reduced below the standard quantum limit, obtaining a squeezed light emission. The measured amplitude noise is about 1 dB below the shot-noise level at 30 MHz and the phase noise is less than +40 dB. The phase noise reduction allows the fluctuation in all the quadrature to be maintained within the dynamic range of the detection system.
