Abstract: We develop a model of an experiment on pattern formation in a liquid-crystal light valve with single feedback mirror [E. Pampaloni et al., Europhys. Lett. 24, 647 (1993)]. An analytical treatment based on amplitude equations explains most of the observed phenomena. Saturation effects are needed to describe a secondary bifurcation between triangular and roll patterns.
