Abstract: A colour-naming experiment, performed by delivering a pair of pulses of equal durations and different hues, matched in brightness, shows that there is a lack of symmetry in response when changing the presentation order from green-before-red to red-before-green. This psychophysical finding has its counterpart at the cortical level, in agreement with data of previous authors. However, the cortical response asymmetry is found by us even in those conditions where the sensation of ‘mixture’ is reported. This result is tentatively inserted in the frame of current models on colour processing.
