Abstract: The onset of chaos in thermal convection in a fluid layer heated from below (that is Rayleigh-Benard convection) has been investigated both in space and time by measuring the temperature field. The field has been characterized in terms of time resolved spatial Fourier analysis and the amplitudes of the modes involved in the time dependent regime have been measured. Two different spatial patterns have been found, one characterized by localized oscillation, the other by traveling waves. This behavior turns out to be very similar to that observed in numerical simulations of Kuramoto-Velarde and Kuramoto-Shivanshinshy equations.
