Abstract: The authors report extensive time-resolved fluorescence and gain measurements in a number of avalanche discharge devices preionized by VUV arcs under a variety of power deposition levels. The goal is to determine the best approach toward development of an energetic tunable blue-green laser using the C-A transition of XeF. The effect of a krypton additive, which greatly improved output lasing in electron-beam-pumped systems, as well as the use of NF3 and F2 as halogen donors has been studied. Fluorescence and gain study results presently show little benefit from the use of krypton additive. Studies using NF3 are limited to below 2 torr. Above this pressure the discharge becomes unstable.
