Abstract: We describe a simple system displaying the intensity profile of specific frequency components of a pulsating light beam. This device employs a spiral pattern of small apertures on a rotating wheel (Nipkow disk), which provides a two‐dimensional scanning of the beam. A phototube ac‐coupled with standard one‐channel electronics is used to analyze the light sampled by the wheel. These elements allow for homodyne, heterodyne, and phase‐detection techniques yielding pictures of the whole mode‐beating profile on an oscilloscope monitor. A demonstration application to the study of the transverse modes of a single‐line argon laser is given.
